My name is Andrei Barrett, and I’m an 18 year old artist based in Portland and NYC. I’m a recent Century High School graduate and an incoming Freshman at NYU.
My artwork often centers around themes of race and sexuality, with my experience as a gay, Asian-American immigrant, serving as the focus for my paintings. With my work, I hope to push for representation within art and media, and to push the conversation on social issues.
You can keep up with my work on my Instagram: @artsyandrei and view my portfolio on my website: www.andreibarrett.com
Fruity
This piece is about being told by peers that I acted “fruity” because I had more feminine interests and acted flamboyantly. Taught by the media that queerness was similar to a scar worn on the face, that should be hidden.
Closeted
Growing up queer and closeted, I spent the majority of my childhood hidden from the rest of the word. This piece illustrates these emotions- the fears, worries, and anxieties- I felt before coming out.
The Breakfast Club
A re-imagined Breakfast Club poster that replaces the all white cast, with an ensemble of Asian-American faces. It’s a critique on the lack of Asian-American representation within mainstream media.
Kung Flu
“Kung Flu” was made as a response to the growing anti-Asian sentiment in the US following the rise of COVID-19 cases and the xenophobic rhetoric used by political figures. This piece was further put into context earlier this year, with another spike in Asian-American hate crimes occurring throughout the country.
